The Masterpiece by Olivia Plender is a comic strip that follows the familiar tale of an unrecognised genius, alone, painting isolated masterpieces in his little room while naively dreaming of art world stardom. Drawing heavily on literary and cinematic stereotypes that surround the romantic figure of the genius, from Zola's The Masterpiece to Tony Hancocks the Rebel, the comic follows the character of Nick, as he tries to negotiate his way to success through the class-ridden atmosphere of Bohemian London. Lars Sture will exhibit; Taking pleasure in ones work, a series of identical embroidered wooden butterflies, and jewellery as a distinctive genre, clippings from auction house catalogues which are transformed into large photographic reproductions revealing the tradition of jewellery as a decoder for social and material status. Works that question ideas of what constitutes the valuable and the rare, the authentic and original. Lists (Long Haul Flight Syndrome) a voice work by Melissa Laing as tribute to the past epic nature of travel and it's lingering romance, but also an expression of the ease, frequency and banality of travelling from country to country. The foreign names still sing but they're attainable, no longer a far off myth. A nurse, as played by the artist Lela Budde, moves through shootouts, montaged from various classic westerns, tending the injured. Films such as "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" are spatially and temporally manipulated, changing the outcome of the film and undermining the macho heroicism of the scenario. Chris Taylor will install wallpaper which is also interactive, printed diary pages create a minimalist pattern that when given over to the public, becomes a revealing collection of confessions, recollections and misgivings. With this will also be presented decorated headboards that explore the bed as the space for dreams, desire and Oedipal nostalgia. Opening Times: 28.08.03 - 06.09.03 Wed - Sat 13.00 18.00 And then by appointment until 21.09.03 |
